What is it?

Hagia Sophia's immense dome and layered interior make the building one of Istanbul's clearest encounters with Byzantine and Ottoman history.

The story behind it

Completed in the sixth century as an imperial church, the building later became a mosque, a museum and again a mosque, accumulating architectural and artistic layers across those changes.

How to get there

It stands in Sultanahmet, within walking distance of the tram and several major historic sites. Dress and access rules can change because it is an active place of worship.
